It’s funny how you find yourself at unplanned crossroads from time to time. Fact is, it’s really not that bad of an idea to plan a stop once in a while and figure out if you are, indeed headed in the direction you intended to go in the first place.
Maybe that the stop is just to check that the last major change in direction you took has adequately corrected your course.
I believe it is a good idea in life, and a must-do idea in business, especially for those of us that are the only ones looking out for ourselves in a small business. Sometimes there is a degree of peace of mind to be found in this momentary hiatus, other times it may be more of a “OH CRAP!”, when you discover that much to your chagrin, and through no real fault of your own, that your latest change in path is completely out to lunch!
In any event, there is one method that I have found that might at least mitigate any impending catastrophe, preventing it from becoming too big of a mushroom cloud, and it is very simple.
At the end of each day, just ask yourself a couple of questions. Be sure to ask them only in your head, unless, of course, you are trying to freak out whoever is in the room;
- Is there anything I did in my business day that I could have done better? How would I do it better?
- Is there anything I did in my business day that is not necessary, or did not move my business ahead? If so, how could I have better used that time?
These two questions alone can make a striking difference in how you spend the next day, and the correction power compinds if done daily, or at least a few times each week.
